During the 'Backstory' Film Residency, Pia worked on editing the footage she shot for her latest feature documentary 'Searching Eva'; the tale of a contemporary icon, growing up in the age of the Internet and turning the search for oneself into a public spectacle. A hybrid of fiction and documentary about a young woman finding her place in a modern world.

Pia Hellenthal is a Cologne based writer & director working in fiction and documentary.
In 2013 Hellenthal graduated from Academy of Media Arts Cologne, holding a Diploma in Media and Fine Art. Her short films screened at international film festivals like Karlovy Vary, Solothurn and Oberhausen and received prizes like the Prix H. R. Giger „Narcisse“ for best swiss short. Next to her own films, Hellenthal has been working for publications like VICE, for who she has been writing and directing the Medienboard Brandenburg funded TV series „True Crime“ and the documentary „Reborn Babies“ which was nominated for the Lovie Awards 2015 and licensed to international TV Stations. Currently Hellenthal is working on her debut „Searching Eva“, for which she was chosen to take part in the 2015 Cinematch Mentorship Program and received the 2016 Gerd Ruge Scholarship from Film und Medienstiftung NRW.
